I missed the start of this thread but caught this reply. I too, and two of
my colleagues, have been having trouble with keyboard stoppage as we type
certain sequences fast. The sequence in particular is "stop" (which is
typed a lot into VersaTerm for our mainframe software) and the final "p"
sometimes doesn't appear. If you notice, and type "p" again it still doesn't
work - you need to type something else to 'unjam' the keyboard.

I reported this to Mac Technical Support in April and they suggested
VersaTerm might be dicking with the keyboard map, but I doubt it (and so
does Synergy - the publishers of VersaTerm). I also have had this happen
once in Think C as I was typing "top" (though it's possible VersaTerm was
in the Multifinder background at the time - I don't remember).

It's easy to type the "op" sequence very fast - the two keys are right
next to each other - but I can't get this to happen more than about once a
day or two. It's totally real, but elusive. I'd love to find the problem
and get a fix ...

So, here are the two combinations. The idea is to type the
characters as fast as possible, either one after the other, or all
together. For the first combination, typing all three together
produces wierdness about 70% of the time for me.
	   Combination one
		   u t space
	   combination two
		   o m p
Well, I've run into about the same problem, duplicated on 2 SE/30's
with extended keyboards... In more than one program, if I'm typing
quickly and type 'o' and another key at more or less the same time,
the keyboard freezes up until I wait a second or so. Usually I have to
hit delete, or some key other than the space bar... Very confusing.
Also, sometimes if I type to and hit the space bar, it comes out too
for no apparent reason.

I have observed very similar problems with at least two different
kinds of terminals. In my case, the terminal would choke if I typed
the word "printf" too quickly. This is a bummer if you are a C
programmer.

These were dumb terminals, not computers. They don't contain much. My
suspicion is that the keyboard scanning chip is scanning the keyboard
matrix too slowly. This scanning frequency probably is a tradeoff
between getting the problem we are discussing and getting key bounces.
The layout of the keyboard will determine which combinations are
poisonous.

If you are adventurous, there might be ways to speed the scanning rate
up by a hardware mod, at least for dumb terminals. Maybe not for Mac's.

This happens to a lot of people here, too. The problem seems to be typing
"to" (not "sto") on ADB keyboards. It only happens to me on our locally
developed terminal emulator and email program, so at first I thought it
was the programs; when I talked to one of the developers of the programs,
he said it happens to him in other text-entry situations, as well.
(Personally, I've never had in happen in a word processor or anything
else.)

In my case, the problem is that I cannot type a space after the word
"to" sometimes; I have to type one letter (which does not appear), then
everything is normal. So, if I typed "stop" and the problem came up, I
would not get the "p", but the space after would be fine. If I tried
to type (why is this the first "sto*" word in my head? =) "stoli",
I would get "stoi". Again, this only comes up occasionally-- about once
every few hours of typing.

I've asked the net for a response to this question before, and never got
any. Please post anything you can find out.

Ciao,
Danno
