I have seen a lot of mac files ending in .sit.hqx at ftp sites. How do you uncompress these files, as I presumed these files are in compressed formats like .zip and .arc for pc files. What type of utilities do I need to uncompress these files? Basically, all I want to know is how to convert these files into executable files for my mac. Thanks

Files with .hqx suffixes have probably been "converted" with something
like Binhex 4.0, a program which translates files between binary and
ascii representations. Files with .sit suffixes have probably been
"compressed" with something like Stuffit 1.5.x, a program which reduces
and restores the size of regular Macintosh files. Anything
you get via ftp has probably been stuffed and binhexed, so you first
need to unbinhex it, and then you need to unstuff it. (If you have
difficulty unbinhexing a file, try opening the file in your favorite
word processor, deleting the mail header, saving the result as a
text-only file, and unbinhexing this file, instead.)
BinHex 4.0 and Stuffit 1.5.1 are both available via ftp in the info-mac
archives on sumex.stanford.edu
