[comp.sys.mac.misc] Total Systems Accelerator for Plus--Help!!!

omo@mcnc.org (Julie E. Omohundro) (08/19/90)

I just bought a Total Systems 020 16 MHz accelerator for my Plus and
I'm having some installation problems:

First, my Plus has a MacSnap 2Meg upgrade, and there isn't room for
the upgrade and the accelerator board, so, one possibility is that
I dump the upgrade and use the original 1 Meg.
FIRST QUESTION: What is the trade-off in performance for a 2 Meg
unaccelerated Plus versus a 1 Meg accelerated Plus?

Next, the manual says that the RAM can be on the Plus logic board
or on the accelerator board, but that performance will suffer if
it's on the logic board, rather than the accelerator board.
SECOND QUESTION: Anyone know *how much* it will suffer? (I'm doing
word processing, not number crunching and did not get the math coprocessor.)

Next, the manual is not too clear about this, but it looks like
I may be able to install only 1 or 4 Megs on the accelerator board,
if I go that route.
THIRD QUESTION: Anybody know if this is true? AND: Anybody know
what the tradeoff in performance is for a 2 Meg, unaccelerated Plus
versus a 1-Meg-on-the-logic-board accelerated Plus versus a 1-Meg-
on-the-accelerator-board Plus?

FINAL QUESTION: Anybody have any suggestions as to what I should do?
I'm only upgrading as stop-gap measure, because I'm pretty sure that
I'll be moving to one of the new Mac IIs next spring. This means
cost is an important consideration: I hate to buy more SIMMS,
but I can't see shelling out $800 for an accelerator and then losing
performance from not having enough RAM, either. It also means that,
although I *do* want a *noticeable* improvement in speed, I'm not
really gung-ho about getting the maximum performance possible.

Thanks in advance!
