[comp.sys.mac.misc] Compression Test Results

3XMQGAA@CMUVM.BITNET (Sari Khoury) (08/20/90)

I did a test of the 3 major compressors and here are the results I got:

File | STD | Diamond 5.1 | Compactor 1.2
                      | Better | Compact |
--------------------------------------------------------------
Microsoft Word 669K | 447K | 467K | 458K
Systems Tools(1) 481K | 309K | 318K | 308K
SoundEdit File 50K | 42K(2) | 45K | 44K
--------------------------------------------------------------
Total 1200K | 798K | 830K | 810K

(1) - The System Tools consisted of a Minimal System Software for any
      Macintosh v6.0.5

(2) - The D-Stuffed file did not use the SoundEdit Compression optimizer.

There are a couple problems with this test. First, DiskDoubler, one of the
hotest sellers at Boston MacWorld wasn't tested. Secondly, there are no
timings... this might be a key issue... so, I'll just whip up the test I
did myself.

I hope this makes sense. The two uncompression tests are time tests, while
the compression test is both time and size. This test is far from complete.
I want to test Diamond, and test more files, sound files, graphic files.
I also want to do a report on the ups and downs of the feature selection,
user interface, and price, all of which are important as the numbers.
