[comp.sys.mac.misc] Using an american laserwriter abroad?

hodas@saul.cis.upenn.edu (Josh Hodas) (08/20/90)

I neeed to know what is needed to use a US LaserWriter in Britain,
(Scotland specifically).

Does it have a switchable, or auto-sensing power supply? Is a
step-down transformer needed, and if so, how large?

If the story is different for the laserwriter Plus and the IInt
tell me the difference. This is for a friend, and I forgot to ask
which one he has.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Josh

I took four LW II's to France last summer for 8 weeks, with no problems.

We hooked each one to a step-down (220-110) transformer. The frequency
difference didn't bother them at all.

(After rummaging around the offices here, I found that a LW II can
handle 50-60 Hz, while a LW Plus is 60 Hz only. We had II's, so all
bets are off on the Plus).

The transformers were *big* and *heavy*. You have to find one that
can handle the power demand of the laserwriter (Power = Volts * Amps).
Remember to round _up_. A bit large is OK, a bit small may lead to
disaster. Check the label on the back.
