Hello Everybody,
I am currious to know what is the system architecture (network,
dbms, e.mail, etc) in companies (such as Ernst&Young) which have
chosen the Mac. as the preferred micro.
We are currently implementing a new information system based on
the client-server architecture. The client is a Mac. and the server
a Unix machine (Dec 54,55,5800). 4 buildings in different locations
must be linked together. Each building will have (at first) 2 LANs
(AppleTalk) connected via Ethernet (Pacershare) to Unix servers.
Probably, T1 lines will connect the buildings.
A database has already been implemented in 4D. However, there is
an urgent need for a more powerful DBMS (Oracle, Sybase, Ingres?)
so that, 4D acts as the front-end for users (who have no computer
literacy) and the main data repository is on the Unix hosts. Another
crucial need is a reliable E.mail throughout the company. Finally,
many users need only dumb terminals accessing the main database.
Well, if you want further info ...
