[comp.sys.mac.misc] MultiFinder hates DAs?

r_ellison@hpfcdq.HP.COM (Bob Ellison) (08/20/90)

I just got my Mac SE/30's memory upgraded to 5 Meg, and I wanted to start
using MultiFinder. MultiFinder comes up fine, but I can't open any desk
accessories under it; I get a beep and that's it. Anyone have any ideas as
to what's wrong? "About the Finder..." shows that there isn't much System
memory allocation left; could this be the culprit? Any easy way to fix it?

Usually this problem is easy to solve. Check your System Folder, and make sure
that "DA Handler" and "Backgrounder" are in there. "DA Handler" acts as a sort
of "application" taht contains all DAs under Multifinder. If you try to open a
DA without it present, the Mac will just beep since it is unable to launch the
DA "shell."

BTW, you will note that all the lines above are neatly right-aligned. Do I get

I have received many helpful hints from this net which have made my job here
easier. Now I would like to take this opportunity to return the favor:

Using an SE/20 with 4meg. running under 6.0.2, and with backgrounder but not
DA handler in the Systems folder, I too get the beep when attempting to select
a DA under Multifinder. But I've found that if I hold down the option key just
before & during the selection of the desired DA, it works fine, just like in
the Finder. I hope that this will work as well for you, too.

Thanks to all the people who responded! The problem turned out to be that
I didn't have the DA Handler application in my system folder. (Silly me,
it looked like it belonged in the Fonts/DAs folder...)

A workaround suggested by many people was to hold down the Option key while
selecting the desk accessory; this forces the accessory to open in the
current application's memory, rather than using the DA Handler.

Thanks again!

What this does is runs the desk accesories in the currently running
application's heap. I personally don't like clogging my other appliations
memory with DAs, so the disk space and memory for the DAHandler I consider
worth it.

Doind this loads the DA into the current application's memory space, bypassing
the DA Handler stuff. This can be useful for spell-checkers and other things
that you need to switch to and from frequently. One caveat is that you will
probably want to increase the application's memory allotment if you do this
frequently or with big DAs, as the DA will be taking up memory that would
normally be available to the application, and this may be a problem.

Subject: MultiFinder and DAs

When you are running multifinder and you try to open a DA and
it beeps at you , there is a problem trying to open the
DA Handler file. Either it is corrupted or it is missing.
Try re-installing from your system disks. This should fix
it.
