[comp.sys.mac.misc] Extend: summary

JAHAYES@MIAMIU.BITNET (09/05/90)

Thanks to all who responded to my vague query about software named
"Extend". Herewith some summary comments from the dozen or so responses.

First, such a product does exist. It is from:

   Imagine That, Inc.
   151 Bernal Rd, Suite 5
   San Jose, CA 95119 USA
   (voice) (408)365-0305

Second, a brief description:

Extend is a package that supposedly brings mainframe modelling
power to the mac world, and it runs on a lowly Plus (no word on
even lowlier macs...:-), and up. It comes with three libraries:
Generic, Discrete Event, and Engineering. A Manufacturing library
is available for an extra (unspecified) fee. It also comes with a
number of step-by-step examples, some of which are ecological in
nature (no pun intended).

Third, some caveats:

While most respondents were generally pleased with the package,
there are a couple of points worth mentioning. First, it's none too
cheap: $495 per unit, direct from the company. No one has seen it
sold via any other dealer (e.g. MacWarehouse). Second, constructing
custom models involves using the built-in language, described by one
person as "a cross between Pascal and C". I would expect a moderately
steep learning curve as a consequence. So it goes.

Again, thanks to all who responded to my request, and you can
stop now :-).

And what do you think you'll do, all alone with an old fish?
