[comp.sys.mac.misc] Printing Postscript

6600bike@ucsbuxa.ucsb.edu (Puneet Pasrich) (05/30/90)

Hello! I downloaded 'atm-tech-tips' and 'atm-something-or-another' from
the Sumex archives (in info-mac/tech) and got the binhexed file
transfered fine. Unstuffed okay. Then I whipped out Send PS 2.0 on the
unstuffed files and neither of them worked. I'd like to know how to
print them out on a IINT (of course it's a postscript printer!), if
anyone knows how to. Also, why was it uploaded in PS form? Why not in
a Word/MacWrite document like everything else?
Thanks!

I am sorry if this an oft asked question, but how do I print a
postscript file? It's an ascii file that I ftped from my unix
account on to my SE's hard drive. I very surprised that I am
having such a tough time since so many apps use postscript to
format their hard copy, I must be missing something glaringly
obviuous.

Anxiously waiting to be proven a fool,

Although anything that prints on an Apple LaserWriter needs to know
about PostScript, generally the only Mac software that can send an
existing PostScript file to a printer is software designed to do just
that. Try grabbing SendPS or DistillPS from sumex.stanford.edu
(info-mac/util, I believe) via anonymous ftp.

If you have Adobbe Ilustrator try that.
I usually use word 4.0 to print the few PS-files I have. This is definitly not
the best solution, but it suffices for the few times I need it.
The procedure:
go into word and open the ascii-PS file. Select the entire text and under
define styles enter the style PostScript. Do NOT have it redefined (answere
no to the aller message). The text selected should disapear (unless you have
Show "q" on). Now print the "empty" document.

If you have access to MS Word:

	1) Open the document with MS Word.
	     a) if the document doesn't appear in the file picker, Cancel
the Open... and pull down the File menu again, this time
holding down the shift key. You now have the option of
		opening any file.
	2) Select the entirety of the text.
	3) While depressing the shift key again, pull down the Format menu
and select All Styles.... Choose the style PostScript from the
	   style picker and click OK.
	4) Word will now recognize the text as PostScript(R) code and will
send it to the printer as such when the document is printed.
