[comp.sys.mac.misc] After Dark "hidden" feature

ksbolduan@amherst.bitnet (09/17/90)

Just a neato little feature of After Dark 2.0 that surprised me:

If you select Shut Down from the Special menu and DON'T turn the
machine off when you get the cordial message from Apple that you can
now safely turn off your Macintosh, After Dark will turn itself on,
but will default back to the skyline screen saver. Pretty cool...

That's not hidden. That's right in the manual. You do have the manual,
right? Just didn't bother to read it...

Thanks. We thought that was a pretty neat trick. Another neat thing is
Notification stuff (the flashing Apple menu icon say with PrintMonitor,
Alarm Clock DA, or E-mail programs). If a program uses this, AD 2.0 will
first wake up, then when it goes back to sleep it will scroll a message
across the top of the screen along with the icon that is blinking in the
Apple menu. This saves the screen while still alerting you that the Mac
wants your attention.

Pyro 4.0 does this too. It has an option to run the screen saver
after you select shutdown.

Actually Pyro! 4.0 does something *similar* but, in my opinion, is sorta
weak. Pyro! 4.0 installs a "Shutdown Task". When the Mac is Shutdown, the
task will be executed. The problem with this is that it is only done once
and any other program's shutdown task will not be executed until Pyro!'s is
done (i.e. you wake Pyro! up). If you wake Pyro! up it will never go back
to sleep because the task is only done once thus leaving the screen
unprotected.

On the other hand, AD 2.0 lets all shutdown tasks execute and then the
"Safely turn off your Mac" dialog comes up. AD 2.0 will then work as
normal. It will time out after X minutes or go to sleep if you move the
mouse to the corner. The only limitation is that it will only show the
"Starry Night" module. This is due to the fact the Mac is pretty much
turned off and there is not a lot you can do (though we did try!).

I really liked this feature, although it kept breaking with Alarming
Events until I got my free 2.0s upgrade (without even asking for it -
thanks, guys!). The only feature I miss from Pyro 4.0 is the capability of
specifying a "secondary" module. What I did was make the secondary a
clock, so that I could see the time by pressing the option key.

Bruce,

I have to say that the notification manager icon idea is GREAT. I
used to always have to wonder if I had any mail waiting when my old
screensaver was on. Now, when I come back to my desk, I know if I
have to resond to someone. Thanks for a wonderful program.
