GIF, I believe, is a graphics compression standard which started on 
CompuServe.  It shrinks the actual file so it doesn't take up too much space 
on your hard disk.  To view GIF files, there are two programs which might be 
helpful:  GIFfer and QuickGIF.  Both of these are PD/shareware and should be 
available on the download section of a local Mac BBS.
