Well, the AppleShare/EtherTalk/MacIP problem *finally* seems to have disappeared. It turns out that the copy of the Installer application supplied to me by the campus personnel was damaged, as were the EtherTalk and AppleShare drivers. Also, one of the AppleShare servers was not working properly, so *everyone* who tried to log in had the same problem. I'm the only one whose System file grew, though...my guess is that the file information was corrupted at the time of the first crash, as was the disk directory. So, to fix everything, I ran DiskExpress (v1.5) to repair the disk directory, then trashed the old System and network software, rebooted with my *own* copy of the Installer and network drivers (against the instructions of Network Services), and reinstalled everything from scratch. In addition, based on a suggestion which I received via E-mail, I locked my copy of MacTCP 1.0.1 to avoid having it corrupted. Same with Mac/IP 4.0. It turned out that one of the "master" copies of the network installer disks was severely corrupted. That was replaced and the server was fixed. Since then, everything has been stable. I'd like to thank *everyone* who E-mailed me with suggestions and words of encouragement. And I'm sorry for any inconvenience caused by the multiple copies of the message -- the mailer system I'm forced to use doesn't permit the type of cross-posting some of you suggested. (A special "thanks-for-nothing" to Patrick Hayes, whose extremely insulting letter was more colorful than anything I'll ever see on my black-and-white SE/30.) So it turned out to be a number of factors -- damaged disks, failing server hardware, and the effects of both combined. Once again, thanks to everyone who helped. -- David Zinkin -- David Zinkin -- Case Western Reserve University (Student) and Rochester General Hospital Radiology Dept. Highly Insulting? Mildly castigating was closer to the tone after having to wade through all those postings. Dave has since explained that CWRU's news setup prohibits cross-posting which is highly antisocial to say the least...
