[comp.sys.mac.misc] Information Field of Macintosh File

yip@mcgill-vision.uucp (McGill/CONCAVE Group) (09/25/90)

I work on a network of Macintoshes where we manipulate
hundreds of files. No one uses the information field
(which could be used to describe the file contents),
and no one seems to know why they don't.
Except ... I've heard that what is entered in an information
field can be deleted during certain sytem maintenance
operations (like rebuilding the System).

Before I waste any time filling in hundreds of information
fields here with file-descriptor information,
could anyone fill me in on the durability
and permanence of information fields. What are the risks?

You've heard correctly. Barring certain arcane manipulations using ResEdit,
rebuilding the Desktop file [something that should be done periodically] will
eliminate all your "Get Info" comments.

Not very durable and exceedingly impermanent [?].

I wouldn't type anything important into a "Get Info" box.

What's the scoop in System 7.0? Do comments still get blown away with
rebuilding the desktop? I.e. are they still mostly useless? Also, it
would be nice to be able to attach Get Info comments in the Standard File
dialogs, especially when creating a new file. I can do this in Windows
using AmiPro (a word processor). It comes in handy for identifying files
you created months ago. Anyone know of an INIT that does this? Anyone
want to write one? Could make a nice addition to Boomerang.
