[comp.sys.mac.misc] Non-interactive Editting of PageMaker Files

yip@mcgill-vision.uucp (McGill/CONCAVE Group) (10/01/90)

I am currently working on mega-project composed in
PageMaker 4.0.
What I will be doing with the file has an air of
programmability: I see that I could save enormous
amounts of time if I could write a program that made
the relatively regular changes (which BTW are too complex
for MacroMaker) to each page. In order to do this,
of course, I need to know how a PageMaker file is composed.

The obvious questions are:
1. Does Aldus give out the file format information for
   files created by PageMaker?
2. If not, can it still be obtained from somewhere else?

A related question:
In the PC Norton Utilities, there is a program that lets
you see the raw data of a file (text *and* format codes)
on the screen, so that you can alter them right in front of you.
Is there a similar utility for the Mac?

I don't know about PageMaker file formats. Perhaps you could contact
Aldus and see.

As to bytewise editing of files, there are a number of utilities
available. MacTools (which is sold with MacTools Deluxe, and also still
with Copy II Mac, I think), which is what I use, does a pretty good job,
though it doesn't search. SUM II and Norton Utilities for the Mac both
come with their own file editors, as well. I can't comment because I
haven't seen either. In shareware/freeware areas, there is something
called MacSnoop (available, I would imagine, from the usual sources)
which is the best that I know of.

Hope this helps.
