----- I have a Macintosh and interested in doing some music stuff with it. Basically I'm interested eventually in writing and recording some songs on my own using a combo of the Mac, MIDI, keyboards, and MacRecorder. I am a complete novice, so a pro setup is really not needed at this point; this is -- at least for the present -- purely for my own enjoyment, not commercial. I would like the output to sound nice, however. Basically I had in mind something like this: the Mac, a MIDI interface (a friend has offered to sell me a used Passport), a set of keyboards, MIDI software, and MacRecorder. I'd like to be able to emulate a 3 or 4 piece band with singer. Eventually I'd like to output it thru a stereo to a cassette deck or some such. Does this sound reasonable? What keyboards can you recommend in the inexpensive price range ($300-$400)? I would want a keyboard that would allow one to create ones own sound forms, not just use built-ins. What MIDI software is good? Can one get reasonable good drum sounds thru a keyboard, or does one need a drum machine? Well, it's probably obvious I'm a novice. I'd like for the moment to get an inexpensive setup with which I can start recording my own music, and I'd appreciate any advice you can offer.
