We currently have an appletalk network connected via a Cayman System's GatorBox to a unix workstation which is used as a file server to the Macs. The system works well except for the backing up and restoration of the Mac files on the unix box. The unix tools used for these operations has trouble with special (to unix) characters that may be part of mac file and folder names (i.e. space, slash, asterisk, etc). What I would like to know is if there exists a software package somewhere that could be installed in a Mac and do file and folder name conversion on the fly (transparent to the Mac user). It would be able to map the names into valid unix characters (0-9, A-Z, a-z, ., and - for example) when talking to a unix volume and then convert back to normal mac names for display on the desltop or in filename windows. Any leads to free or commercial packages would be GREATLY appreciated! Someone must have already run into this problem and developed a fix for it. Thanks in advance.
