I just got MSWord 4.0 and I can't seem to find out how to set a default font for new documents. I've tried every combination from the Commands.. menu but it doesn't work. I still get the New York style font when I start a new document. Can anyone help?? -- ====================================================================== Bob Esposito Voice: (215) 466-6831 Bell Atlantic Corp. FAX: (215) 466-2593 Philadelphia, Pa. On a related note, our MS Word 4.0 always starts up in "Show Codes" mode, where all the spaces are dots and all the paragraphs end with (what else?) paragraph markers. This confuses some of the people here. I've tried turning it off, then doing "Edit... Preferences... OK", but that doesn't seem to save it. Any ideas? -- ... If you choose "hide paragraphs" (command-Y) and then quit from Word, the next time you start up the paragraph markers etc. should still be hidden. It sounds like the settings file is not being saved for some reason; maybe you should check that people are quitting from Word rather than simply turning the machine off when done word processing. I've found that some users, particularly those who have come from DOS, don't know about the importance of choosing "quit" and "shutdown" when they finish working.

Change the Normal style using the Define Styles command. Include whatever you want and click on Set Default. This is mentioned near the bottom of page 45 in the User's Guide/Reference manual. -- Bob Deskin Cognos Incorporated (613) 738-1338 ext 5003 P.O. The Commands... dialog has nothing to do with the default font. What you need to do is edit the Normal style. Select "Define Styles" (cmd-T) from the Format menu; click on Normal; select the font and font attributes you want; click on Set Default; say OK to the confirmation dialog.
