[comp.sys.mac.misc] MachTen for Macintosh?

jude@nas.nasa.gov (Jude A. George) (10/12/90)

Has anyone had a chance to play with Tenon's Macintosh MachTen? How
does it compare with the MacMach being used on the CMU campus? Tenon
claims that it provides preemptive multitasking for MacOS as well as
unix, but they also claim that it runs on the Classic (!) and SE. I only
have their glossy, but I may get a closer look at Interop tomorrow...
if they're demonstrating it. Yah, let's see unix run on a Classic.

I had a chance to play with MachTen at Interop. VERY slick! It
is also very beta. I have the blurb sheet... here is a quick overview:

- MachTen support true UNIX multitasking
- supports comm onver AppleTalk, Ethernet, and serial, includes
Berkeley TCP/IP and include the 'full Internet protocol suite', nfs
- also includes libraries to access Mac ToolBox
- MacOS interface

runs on : Mac Classic, Mac LC, Mac SE, Mac SE/30, Mac II, IIcx, IIfx
2MB min, $MB recommended for a development system

a two user binary license is included in the standard system price,
unlimited user binary licenses are also available...

MachTen is the Mach Kernel on top of the Mac Toolbox, with
BSD 4.3 Reno on top of the Mach Kernel.

Pricing was around $500.00, they should ship first quarter '91

Looks like this could be a real neat product, especially on a Portable.
It takes about 20MB of disk.

Disclaimer: This info is from the blurb sheet, and from the folks
that were in the Tenon booth at Interop. I do not have the product,
and have only played with for a few minutes at Interop.
