[comp.sys.mac.misc] dumping to a UNIX host

cspencer@spdcc.COM (Cliff Spencer) (10/17/90)

I'm looking for a good way to backup my 100mb Mac disk through a high
speed modem to a UNIX host. What is the best way to do this?

Have you calculated the *minimum* time to do such a backup? At 1,000
characters a second (9600 baud), it would take you 100,000 seconds to
backup 100Mb, i.e. a minimum of 27 hours).

If you allow for, say, 50-80% throughput (which is likely if you're
sending many small files), then it would take 2.25 days to make the
initial backup. Will the phone company allow a phone call to last for
this long? I'm not sure.
