[comp.sys.mac.misc] New Mac LC: FPU or PMMU possible?

mwnorman@bcarh332.bnr.ca (Michael Norman) (10/17/90)

I would like to know if anyone has SEEN the new LC? Our
local dealers will not have dealer-demo models until
next week. My question is: Is is possible to get
a FPU on the LC? Is is via an un-populated socket
on the beastie itself, or perhaps via the PDS slot?
Same question for the PMMU. System 7.0 is supposed
to have virtual memory; 68020+PMMU == virtual memory!,
n'est-ce pas?

Thanks in advance,
me

No.

Both true, but the LC will not provide this functionality.

Dear Chaz -
Need to do a little research on this one, it is possible for an FPU to be
hooked into the LC via the PDS. In fact, we are encouraging people to examine
putting a socket for FPUs on to their PDS cards.
I don't know if the PMMU can work in the same fashion - will have to see
what lines you get via the PDS connector, but it might be possible to hook
in a PMMU also.

Dynamac(800-234-2349) has announced a PDS card for the LC that has sockets
for an FPU and 68030. Daystar is also rumered to have a similar card.

Jordan, it would seem to me that if someone created a 030 card
for the LC, that this could provide MMU and FPU (if added to the
030 card) for the PDS slot. Do you know of any reason why the
LC might not be able to support such a card? Anyone else that
knows the answer can jump right on in..`
