I'm looking for some software to protect various files and folders (and, in
fact, whole volumes) from prying eyes. These are the capabilities I'm
looking for:
o Password protection for volumes, folders, and files
o Can't be bipassed by booting from a floppy
o Effective outside of the finder (i.e., in SF dialogs)
o Allows "guest" startup
o Can be set to start up automatically with Guest privileges
(i.e., no annoying "password" dialog on startup), password
can be entered from DA/cdev
o Protects secured data from being viewed by volume editor, such
as FEdit or SUM Tools. (This is not as important as the rest)
I've looked at MacPassword, but that doesn't quite fit my needs - the fact
that it puts up a dialog every startup is a problem, since some people have
no idea what to do with it. That's why I need something that can default
to guest privileges.
A minor question about MacPassword - the protection in the demo version is
fairly easy to circumvent. Does the High Security protection remain in
effect even if the computer is booted from a floppy?
Thanks for any information you can give me. I'd prefer replies via email,
since the traffic on this group tends to make reading it on an intermittent
basis inconvenient.

(This is not as important as the rest) What you want to use is FileGuard 2.5 from ASD Software. I have been using it for 9 months now and it provides the security you want and then some. There was some talk here a couple months ago that it was insecure but it is not. Just keep your ResEdit program in a secure folder. Even with ResEdit around, your data is still safe. Basically FileGuard patches the driver on your hard drive and for anything that wants to bypass the file system, it cant without your password. I can give you the address and phone number if you want via Email. bp@[128.113.10.204] <bp@acm.rpi.edu>
