[comp.sys.mac.misc] 68030/FPU for Macintosh LC - It exists!

gaynor@hpuxa.ircc.ohio-state.edu (Jim Gaynor) (10/20/90)

I spoke with Dynamac recently, about the products they're
discussing for the LC. They believe, with good reason, that the LC
could make a damn good portable with a few additions... and they plan
to add them, as well as some rather sweet "power" upgrades as well.
Here's the info I got:

o LCDevice: An '020 PDS card for the Macintosh LC that offers sockets
for a FPU and a 68030. The LCDevice will also contain connections for
DynaMac's LC Flatscreen (see below). The LCDevice will ship
unpopulated, although either Dynamac or an associate will offer the
68030/FPU combo.

	Unpopulated LCDevice: $99 MSRP
68030/FPU for LCDevice: $250 MSRP (approx)

o LCDisplay: a backlit monochrome 640x480 LCD screen for use with the
Macinotsh LC and the LCDevice. 1-bit and 4-bit versions will be
availible. Reaction time is in the 100 millisecond range. This is
slightly slower than the Portable's screen - most DOS LCD screens are
about 250 ms.

Also, a version will be available that includes a battery pack
that will power the Mac LC and the LCDispay for approx. 3 hours,
rendering a very functional portable of the Mac LC. The "LC Portable"
version of the LCDisplay will include carrying case, and have support
for an internal modem, and some other things that <sob> I'm not
supposed to mention.

LCDisplay: $995 (1 bit version) MSRP
			$1500 (4 bit version) MSRP

While exact pricing was not given, I was told that one would
be able to assemble a full "LC Portable" for under $4000 MSRP,
excluding the cost of the LC itself.

I was also told that, come January, Dynamac plans to begin
marketing their products aggresively via resellers. Pricing through
resellers is intended to be sufficiently aggressive to render academic
discounts unneeded. However, the CEO of Dynamac said that Dynamac
-will- accept orders from the educational community for these products
at a significant discount from MSRP until such time as reseller
distribution begins.

Dynamac: 1.800.234.2349

Disclaimer - I am in no fashion associated with Dynamac. I
had compiled this information in response to questions raised at a
recent educational meeting, and thought the Net would find this
information of use.
