[comp.sys.mac.misc] Microsoft vs. HIG

ralphm@portia.Stanford.EDU (Ralph Melton) (10/11/90)

I've just gotten more thoroughly pissed than before. I am sick of seeing
Microsoft Word's Open dialog located off to the side of the screen. How many
times do the human interface guidelines repeat that dialogs should be
centered on the screen, with twice as musch space below as above? I want
to start a (no doubt previously done) session of flaming Microsoft, this
particular time on their playing fast and loose with the human interface
guidelines.  I don't care right now about whether the guidelines are right;
I'm nore interested in the ways Microsoft breaks them.

I'll just post one now, and gripe about the off-center dialog boxes. After
using a bunch of applications that put the open dialog box in the Apple-
dictated place, it is really weird to have it off to the left.

What Screen do you have? On any Mac that I have worked with the Microsoft
applications did exactly what the guidelines state should happen.

You aren't by any chance running Front and Center, are you? That always acted
weird with MS products.
