[comp.sys.mac.misc] Classic, LC, IIsi -- a few thoughts

gross@umiami.miami.edu (JD144) (10/23/90)

Just some general ramblings...

Mac Classic: Nice idea...should've been a 68020...dump the 6800 already.
And give it some greys. It's been a long time since people
actually went out and bought b/w. (I know, I'll get a ton
of responses saying "Well, not everyone needs color." and
I'll keep saying "Yeah, but everyone *LIKES* color." Seems
Apple is insisting that a cheap price justifies doing without
color. Or a FPU. Or adding 512K of ROM, most of which will
             never be touched.

Mac LC: I dunno about this one. Should've been a 16MHz '030 w/ FPU.
Now we have another bus to worry about and these VRAM SIMMs.
The LC will be only one able to use them...will Apple make bigger
ones so we can get 24-bit color on them? Just how many different
functions can you fit on one board? Otherwise the LC seems perfect
for anyone needing a cheap color Mac.

Mac IIsi: Only one done right. Good speed. Can add FPU for a reasonable
price. Generally, I've never seen anyone use more than one
slot in either the three-slot or six-slot Macs. And if you
do use that many, you shouldn't be looking at the IIsi anyway.
(I did see an article about some company making an external
           4-slot NuBus chassis...shades of TRS-80! :) ) This'll be
what I hopefully will replace me SE with.

As for the rest...the SE/30 seems out of place...from the one extreme
you have the Classic...the other you have a souped up 16MHz '030. Then
got back down again with the LC. Guess Apple is really separating compact
and modular lines.

The prices on the IIci and IIfx must come down..if Apple is really serious
into getting back the market share they've lost. And they should give
SE/30 owners the 512K ROMs. And they should take all my suggestions cuz
I'm one of many (now suffering :) ) shareholders of Apple stock.

So, listen up! :)
