A friend is considering a HP inkjet printer for his new Mac classic. I believe its called a DeskWriter in the apple world (DeskJet in IBM). Does anyone have any experience with them? I'm particularly interested in speed, say for MSWord text. What about the Apple PersonalWriter SC in comparison. Is it worth an extra $G (CDN)? -- Bob Laughlin laughlin@cs.sfu.ca

check out the latest (November, i think) MacUser. They do a nice comparison of the DW, PLWsc, and one other low cost (?) quickdraw printer.. -- please let me know if you see multiple copies of my postings (one copy of my opinion is one too many right :-) -george @sol1.lrsm.upenn.edu

I am an owner of a DeskWriter, and I love it! It's resolution is the same as a LaserWriter (300 dpi), and depending on the situation, much faster when printing. Shortly, HP will introduce new water-proof ink which will keep the ink from running if something is spilled on it (as if it would be any good anyway). Finally, with ATM and TypeAlign, the same scalable fonts that are on the LaserWriter (at least the Adobe fonts) can be used. As far as I'm concerned, the DW is quite a grab at 1/5 the price of a LaserWriter. David Kruckemyer dak36354@uxa.cso.uiuc.edu or david@sumter.cso.uiuc.edu

I agree, the DeskWriter is a great printer especially when teamed with the newer font tools from Adobe and others. At my previous job we did significant research on the affect various papers had on image quality on several different inkjet printers. The results surprised me in that there were dramatic differences in perceived image quality, even to lay people brought in to assist analyzing our results. Unfortunately I can't give you the data, due to security agreements I signed, but I can tell you to experiment on your own with various papers. The results will astound you. There is even a significant difference between the "front" and "back" of the SAME sheet of paper. This may seem like old news to some folks, but it was a real surprise to me. Good luck
