[comp.sys.mac.misc] Connecting Macintoshes and Appletalk Printers

ebm@corvair.almaden.ibm.com (Eli Messinger) (10/27/90)

I've been using a Mac-II connected to an original Apple Laserwriter. The
connection is via a cable that has a round connector at the Mac end, and a
small square (Appletalk) connector at the printer end. I have the switch
on the back of the printer set to "Appletalk." In the Chooser DA I've
selected the printer and set Appletalk active, and everything's been fine.

Recently I've gotten a new IBM printer that has an Appletalk port. The
manual that came with the printer talks about the need for "Appletalk-
compatible connection boxes" at both the printer and Mac end of the cable.

I tried conncting the new printer similarly as the old (with a simple
cable), and the Mac no longer sees an active printer.

Can someone explain why I need these connection boxes now (which is what
I'm guessing the problem is), but didn't need them before?
