My Mac is sick - can anyone suggest the cause and/or cure?
The setup: I have a Mac IIcx with 8 meg ram, an 80 meg
hard drive and a microtech removable hard drive. The mac
is connected to an appletalk network.
The symptoms: With the removable hard drive connected, the
mac can run for maybe an hour and then it freezes up or there
is some system error in a bomb dialog box. Upon rebooting,
it usually only lasts an additional 10 minutes or so. On
occasion, upon rebooting, the macintosh plays the sound
described by the diagnostic sound sampler as Test Monitor.
After removing the Microtech drive, the mac runs fine.
(A qualification: yesterday, my mac crashed after about
12 hours - without the Microtech connected up but it has
never crashed if I've shut it off while not in use for an
hour or more ie if I never let it run as long as 12 hours.)
I have traded removable drives with a friend and got the same
behavior. The people here tell me it is probably the mother board
and that the next step is to replace it and see if that makes
the problem go away. Does this sound like good advice?
