[comp.sys.mac.misc] CD-ROM drives

hoshino@tkysun.phys.s.u-tokyo.ac.jp (HOSHINO Takashi) (10/28/90)

I'm now planning to buy a CD-ROM drive.
There is many drives from many compmanies like Apple, NEC, Toshiba.
I don't know which one I should buy.
Give me a suggestions about it.

Thanks in advance.

MacUser's MiniFinder's recommend the Toshiba the highest and warn that the NEC
is slow. However the NEC is portable and cheap (but I think you need an
adaptor). You could always pay for the Apple logo also--no harm there.

I've had a NEC CD ROM (the portable one) for quite a few months and it has
been great. It's seeking is slow, but it's overall transfer is quick.
Once it finds, a hypercard stack, for instance, it quickly reads it. I
won't argue and say it's seeking isn't fast.

I've been very happy with it, no problems at all. I got mine when they
first came out and it has worked as advertised.
Ooops, one small problem - when trying to play audio CD's, it doesn't
like some of them when it's hooked up to the mac. When I have it by itself
it works perfectly.

So for you "power users" out there that think you need the fastest seeking,
this and that on you CD ROM drives, I invite you to think again. While
seeking rate is important, once the file is found the actual transfer is
what makes a big difference. I've used Apple's CD Reader on a Mac IIx system
and I honestly didn't think that the speed difference in that unit compared
with the NEC unit warranted the difference in price. BTW, the NEC drive is
connected to my mac plus.

Hope this helps someone...

DON'T BELIEVE IT.

We tried to use this turkey: couldn't get it to work with ANY mac that had
another SCSI device. That includes any hard drive, including your internal
hard drive.

If you've got a floppy-only Plus or SE, perhaps the NEC quasi-portable
(it's not very shock-resistant either) is a good choice. But it won't grow
with you.

If you're still determined to go this route, make me an offer...
