[comp.sys.mac.misc] I NEED TO FIND SOMEONE WITH STUFFIT DELUXE

dan@chaos.cs.brandeis.edu (Dan Schwarz) (11/12/90)

I hope someone out there will be able to help me out... I came across a new
copy of Stuffit Classic 1.6 the other day, and I decided to try it out by
decompressing an old Stuffit 1.5.1 archive that I've got on disk. Before
it could begin decompressing, it had to convert it to a Stuffit Classic
compatible archive. It warned me that this process would be irreversible,
but I figured there would be no problem so I said "OK" and continued.

What a stupid idea!

It turns out that the files were originally Stuffit'ed using the encryption
and password feature. Stuffit Classic refuses to unstuff the encrypted files;
it says I have to purchase Stuffit Deluxe to do that!

So now I'm faced with a terrible situation: Some very important papers
(English and computer science reports for the past two years, along with
my resume) are trapped in a file which can only be unstuffed by a program
that I do not own! I don't have the bucks to blow on Stuffit Deluxe...

So I'm asking for help - if anyone out there has a copy of Stuffit Deluxe,
who would be willing to use it to decrypt my archived files, I'd sure
appreciate it. Alternately, does anyone know of a freeware program which
will handle decryption of my archive? Thanks!

_Dan

What you need is UNSTUFFIT DELUXE, which is a freeware product.
StuffIt Deluxe is not a free or shareware product.

Otherwise, I am not sure I understand how the author got into this
position. In fairness to Ray Lau and Alladin, I would like to point
out that it is possible to create StuffIt 1.5.1 compatible archives with
Classic.

My $0.02: StuffIt Classic is an excellent product, and a
generous contribution at this time, considering that Alladin is trying
to launch Deluxe as a commercial product. After paying my StuffIt
shareware fee, I never expected to see an update. Having gone out on
a limb with Classic, it must be a bit disconcerting for Ray Lau to see
so much 'bad press' on the net, particularly when many of the comments
have said little more than 'why can't I figure out how to ...
download c.b.m files'. (disclaimer -- this comment refers to the
ongoing "send me part # of StuffIt Classic 'thread' ", not to the
reasonable request of <dan@chaos.cs.brandeis>.)

Nope. UnstuffIt Deluxe will not unstuff password protected archives
either...
