[comp.sys.mac.misc] Problems with Norton's "Speed Disk"

psrds@warwick.ac.uk (Dr T A Harley) (11/13/90)

Whenever I run my Norton "speed-disk" on my 20Mb hard disk attached to my
Mac+, I get a system error (ID=28) when "optimizing directory".

If I then try running disk doctor, I get a range of problems, mainly along the
lines of the allocation bitmap needing attention, or problems with the
directory. In both cases the disk doctor claims to mend them OK. So I run
speed-disk, the same thing happens, and the same problem is back again . . .

Any ideas? The same speed-disk works fine on other machines. My HD20 has
about 1 mbyte free, is 5% fragmented, and there are no funny INITs or special
configurations.

Thanks in advance,

Trevor Harley

Well, as a first suggestion, I would say free up a couple more meg and try
again.

I don't think that the problem has to do with how full the HD is. I am
having the same problem with my system (Mac SE, 20MB internal HD, FDHD
upgrade, 2.5 MB RAM, External 20 MB HD, External 30 MB HD, approx. 2-3 MB
free on internal HD) even with no inits & cdevs on - but I'm able to use
speed disk on the two external drives (even with them all on - nice job
guys!). Anyone at Norton/Symantec: could this be a real bug?

This is probably absolutely no help, but I make sure all cache
related software is disabled before using Speed Disk- if I have
either TurboCache from PLI or Daystar's FastCache board enabled,
its time for fireworks...

The same goes for cache related software and LaCie's disk management
software, Silverlining.
