[comp.sys.mac.misc] U-M Macintosh Archives wants YOUR help!

dauter@terminator.cc.umich.edu (Michael Dautermann) (11/26/90)

Hi folks....

I'm not sure if you've seen this message before, either as a
form letter in your mailbox (I send it out to a lot of folks I
see on UseNet..), or on another Usenet group.. just hit J, if you
don't want to hear about the online archive.

I help to maintain a Macintosh Public Domain and Shareware archive
at the University of Michigan. Online, there's probably more unique
and useful stuff than what you'll find on most other Internet archives
(we're not in competition - as we're all in this together, of course --
it's just a new and alternative site to check out for Mac stuff).

To access the archive, FTP anonymously to um-mts.cc.umich.edu (35.1.1.43)
or ub-mts.cc.umich.edu (35.1.1.47) and type in "cd PC2:", which will put
you into the Macintosh directory. Since we're not running off a Unix
mainframe (yet..), instead of typing "ls" (which will take about 5 minutes
to prepare, and then 10 minutes to scroll down your screen!), you can
retrieve the index file by typing in "get !index index" at your FTP
prompt, and for more detailed instructions "get do/download2 download.txt".

I know a lot of you folks out there have access to unusual and interesting
sources of mac software yourself (GEnie, Ci$, Online America, in-house, etc.),
if you see anything interesting that you think would be useful made available
to the Internet/Bitnet, upload it and send it as a mail message to me at
"userw72n@um.cc.umich.edu" or the address below (I try to answer any
questions, suggestions, bad jokes, etc.). The reason I'm looking for new
programs, of course, is to help make our archive a place for developers
to drop off new applications & files, and to make it a popular place
for you to look for things you need. Drop me a line and let me know
how it goes for you. Thanks!
