[comp.sys.mac.misc] IIsi and the MacRecorder

v132gcnx@ubvmsb.cc.buffalo.edu (John A Feinberg) (11/28/90)

I recently called Farallon to ask them some questions about the MacRecorder.
I got some good news and some bad news. The good news is, if you upgraded to
SoundEdit 2.0, you get 2.0.3 free! When I called last week, they said that they
would ship it immediately. I upgraded to 2.0 about a year and a half ago, from
1.0! Not bad. Version 2.0.3 allows the IIsi input to act just like a Mac-
Recorder device.
The bad news is, the representative said that I would NOT be able to use
the IIsi's input in conjunction with the MacRecorder for stereo sound. I was
tempted to ask why I would need SoundEdit 2.0.3, a IIsi, AND a MacRecorder, but
I didn't, because I got worried they wouldn't send me the free upgrade :) It
seems to me once you get the IIsi and SoundEdit 2.0.3, the MacRecorder would no
longer be necessary. Is this so? Should I sell my MacRecorder with my Mac SE?

1.	The IIsi has stereo output, but mono input.

2.	The same software for the IIsi (or lC) sound input device will probably
not work *entirely well* with the Farallon MacRecorder because of the
MacRecorder's driver implements the StopRecording command poorly.

In essence, the MacRecorder will stop sampling with its internal buffer
if issued a StopRecording command. This means you'll have to restart
everything the next time you need to record, and keep track with your
own internal buffers. The IIsi and LC setup avoids this problem
entirely by continuing to sample after a StopRecording; it just doesn't
	keep or transfer the data.

You have to have two software versions...one for Apple, and one for
	Farallon devices.

	Dumb.

	The Apple way is better.
