I have just installed an HP PaintJet on our Mac network. We are running AppleTalk on PhoneNet connectors throughout the building. A couple StarControllers tie four zones together. I am running NetSerial software version 3.5 from Shiva, and the 1.0 driver from HP. The problem I am experiencing seems to be related to the HP driver. Case: Printing to the HP PaintJet through the NetSerial from the SAME zone works without problems. Turning on "narrate connection" shows me all the messages I expect to see from the NetSerial, and printouts are fine. Case: Printing to the PaintJet from a zone DIFFERENT than that in which the PaintJet lives causes problems. Typically, all of the connections to the NetSerial occur without problems. Then, within roughly two minutes, I will get a dialog reporting that the PaintJet is not responding. Clicking OK to allow the driver to retry ends up with a report of a dropped connection from the NetSerial. Telling the NetSerial to re-connect will result in a short pause, followed by the "PaintJet is not responding" error again. Note: I have found that printing with the HP Page Setup option "Match Laserwrite r Page Size" seems to cause more problems. If I leave this option unchecked, I can occassionally get a print to work from a distant zone. I never have problems from the local zone. Any ideas? Are there newer versions of software for either machine? Please E-mail responses.
