To everyone who responded: Thanks for your response to my questions. I got many good suggestions. The simplest way to re-order the icons in a folder is to open the folder (leaving the shaded icon of the folder itself still visible), show the files by name/date/whatever you want them ordered by, select them all, and then drag them into the shaded icon of the folder that they are already in. However, there appears to be no way to maintain them in the desired order automatically as new files are created in that folder; you have to repeat the above procedure periodically. The clea nup question seems harder. Suggestions included using ResEdit to edit the LAYO resource in the Finder, using the Layout program (available in the archives) to change the icon spacing (easier than ResEdit), and using option-Cleanup to avoid overlap during a particular cleanup.
