[comp.sys.mac.misc] Reversed Mouse?

cdelay@cie.uoregon.edu (Christian De Lay) (01/29/91)

This is probably going to be an odd request, but does anyone know of a
software method to reconfigure the Mac ADB mouse to work in reverse? (So
that up is down, down is up, etc)?

Sure. Turn the mouse around so that the cord is toward you.

There is an init called April 1 INIT available at sumex which does
exactly what you want. It's kind of cute, although other than putting
it into the shared INIT folder on a server and having *loads* of fun
watching your users get frustrated, I can't imagine why you would want
such capability. I hear that it's mandatory on all Macs sold in
Australia and points south of the equator... After all, if the moon is
upside down, why not the mice?

Well, you could always turn the mouse upside down...but seriously, there are
indeed times when reversing mouse positioning is needed. We, for instance,
have developed several applications for performing clinical psychological
experiments on the Mac. One of these apps, helps to analyze a subject's
hand-eye motor coordination. Thus, I built a small routine to accomodate the
reversal of the tracking on input devices.

The code is written in MPW Assembler 3.x and is constructed to be called from
MPW Pascal 3.x but could easily be modified to work with any assembler or
compiler. The code is quite compact, simple, and easy to use. It works under
any version of the MacOS including 7.bx. The DTS guys have given the "kosher"
seal of approval. It takes a single procedure call to enable reversing (either
vertical, horizontal, or both). Another call will restore the normal mouse
behavior. Even nicer, it works with any tracking devices (i.e. tablets) and
works with non-ADB tracking devices (i.e. MacPlus mice). I originally went
the ADB route with the code but this isn't a smart idea because of hardware
incompatibility and all that!

If anyone is interested in obtaining the source code for these routines,
just drop me an e-mail address.

There is an INIT that works on the Mac Plus, I know, and it might work on
machines that use ADB mice. The file is called "April1 init" or something
like that. I plunk it in system folders here and there every April Fool's
day. You would be amazed at how fast you can get used to using the mouse
in reverse like this. If you cannot find a copy of it, let me know and I
will send it to you.

"reconfigure the Mac ADB mouse to work in reverse?"

Why? Why don't you just turn it upside down!!! hehehe
