[comp.sys.mac.misc] MacCenter, their reputation?

Hi, there,

I think many people are just about to increase their memory size,
including me, because the SIMM price has almost been in its bottom
line.

The best price I can find among those ads on MacUser and MacWorld is
the $35 for 1Meg SIMM (it's not explicitly listed, but I suppose the
$35 price is for 1Meg SIMM) from MacCenter. Has anyone had the
experience buying stuff from them?

I will be grateful if you can share your experience with me. Thanks in
advance.

Hi, this is in Re: hhchou@well.cs.umd.edu regarding SIMM prices
from MacCenter and SIMM puchasing in general.

No I haven't bought any from MacCenter but I did call them up to
find out their prices about 2 weeks ago. They say $35.00 / 1Mb
is the price for > 100 ns access time SIMMs. If you need
80 ns SIMMs for IIci, their price is $41 - $45 (or something like
that), which is a bit more expensive than Chip Merchant ($39 / 1Mb
for 80 ns SIMM).

If you really would like to minimize the cost, you should
    (i) Call them up and confirm on the price of the SIMMs with
        access time you need,
(ii) Whether or not you need to pay sales tax,
(iii) Whether or not they accept credit cards, if you'd like
        to use one.

On my IIci (total 8 Mb), one half (4 x 1Mb) came from ChipMerchant
and the other half from (4 x 1Mb) is from Technology Works; and
all of them are working just perfect. At present it looks to me
Chip Merchant offers the lowest price for 80 ns ones, but they
don't accept credit cards (check, COD only), and in my case I have
to pay the sales tax. Technology Works is more pricy, but they accept
credit cards, and offer discounts for a BMUG member (which I am),
and I won't have to pay the sales tax, because they are out of CA.
So the total cost from those two vendors came out roughly equal.

I ordered a send-only FAX modem from MacCenter -- they were the cheapest
place I could find. The modem came a few days later than they said it
would, but it still showed up in a reasonable amount of time (about a week
and a half). I'd order from them again.
