[comp.sys.mac.misc] Mac Yoosers R Stupid

afrancke@linus.claremont.edu (02/06/91)

The article you read about (MS-DOS makes better writers) was also discussed in
the (Oct? Nov?) issue of MacWorld (or was it MacUser?). Anyway, if you wan't
another point of view on it, check it out.

As a note of interest, my father (a DOS-person) replicated the
Delaware study on the campus of Albion College, mostly in order
to test several packages claiming to help analyze writing skills.

He was unable to detect any differences between papers written
on macs and those written on PCs. I believe the manuscript from
that study has been accepted somewhere; I'll check on the details

Well, so far several of the postings responding to this
article have been of the tone: I've heard this before, please
don't post anything to the net on this, and then they are
usually followed by an inarticulate reference like: this was
discussed on the net somewhere, but I don't remember where.

I would appreciate it if such posters could be more accurate in
their references. What issue of Academic Computing (MacWorld) was
this in? What pages? These
are the questions my librarian will ask me. Unless you provide
this information, or express an opinion that directly relates to
the subject, you are generating "net noise", not me.

I'm sorry if this sounds a little 'snippy' but as fellow Mac users
I think you can appreciate the fact that I am harassed daily by
"DOS-holes" and this article (which is recent; 2/3/91) is part of
the ammunition. Your opinions and information are greatly appreciated.

There have several other replies to the article, one of which was
submitted to Academic Computing but which they did not choose to
publish. One of these articles, published by a loose groups of
networked scholars forming the "Megabyte University", is available
via anonymous ftp:

	ftp umd5.umd.edu
	username: anonymous
	password: your_name
cd pub/jac ! journal of academic computing
	binary ! for binary files
get halio.macword	! for the halio artice
get comment.macword	! for the comment on halio

(The instructions for digging out this stuff came from the April 1990
issue of Academic Computing.)

The comments point out a lot of problems with the original article,
enough to justify the assertion that if the article had been submitted
to a "scholarly" journal, it would not have been accepted.

For those of you without internet access, I'll be happy to send you
an ascii-text copy of the two articles.

See ya
Steve
