[comp.sys.mac.misc] HELP! Bizarre problems with my Mac

bclee@.berkeley.edu (Bob C. Lee) (02/06/91)

Lately I've been having problems with my Mac. There were some
crashes and some annoying problems. Ok, I'll just try really
hard to describe the problems, hope you can help me.

	1)	Quite frequently, the BOMB would appear with the message:

"Finder on this disk is damgaed or missing"

	2)	When I use GetInfo and some other commands this message appears:

"Not enough memory to do this command"

	3)	When I try to open some file or folder, this leaped out:

		    "Out of finder memory"

Ok, for problem 2 & 3, usually I had no problem when I tried it
	    the second time.

	4)	Sometimes the screen mysteriously redrew itself. Whatever
modification I made moments ago would be of no effect.
Oh, yeah, and after the redraw, some files I put in a folder
would appear far away at either the upper-righthand corner
or the lower-right one. When I say "far" I mean about two
		or three window sizes away.

	5)	Finder gone, (using MultiFinder), but returned after I quit
		all the applications.

These were the most annoying problems among some other crashes which
I really can't remember how they happened.

BTW, I have a Mac IIci with 8meg RAM, 80 meg HD. I suspected some
sort of virus present, but found none after I ran all the virus
	programs I possessed.

If you need the list of all of my inits and cdevs, I'd e-mail them
to you. I don't remember the list right off my head.

Anyways, so far I don't have any data lost yet, but I am quite
paranoid about losing some in the future, so if you have ANY idea
what is happening, please reply via e-mail.

Sorry about the length. Thanx in advance.

	G'day,

	...b.o.b...

I have a IIci, 8Meg RAM with a Quantum 105m internal, running 6.0.5
somewhat without your symptoms ... I qualify this due to a game
Indiana Jones failing strangely IFF several %Opens are performed
without any intervening %Quits.

I'm running DiskExpress II, Virex, Norton Fast Find and Directory
assistance, Word 4.0, Canvas 2.1, Illustrator 88 2.0, ...
without problems.

It's kind of unlikely that the Finder is missing but it might be damaged
and you might need to reinstall they system. Try some of the other ideas (below)
first.

I think this means you do not have enough memory allocated for the Finder which
may be the cause of the above problem as well. Try to increase by selecting the
Finder icon and using GetInfo (hope you can do this much) and increasing the
size. If the current size is around 160K try 300K.

Same as above. Might also need to redo the Desktop file. see next.

When I had this happen to me I had to rebuild the Desktop File. Hold down the
command-option keys during startup.

I had this happen to me just once and that was because I needed more memory and
the system got more memory by quitting the Finder. Were you running some
background printing when this happened? Large, complex postscript files do
bad things to print spoolers including the Print Monitor.
There are some utilities that might help you:
1. There are things called system heap fixers which might help in a few cases.
2. There is a book called The Macintosh Bible and its companion "What do I do
now?"
3. There are things called Mug SHots that create a list of inits and other
useful system stuff that might help in reporting a problem.
Good Luck.
