[comp.sys.mac.misc] Mystery Files

sampson@cod.NOSC.MIL (Charles H. Sampson) (02/14/91)

A few days ago three mysterious files mysteriously appeared on my hard
disk. I'm hoping someone out there has some idea what's going on. My
apologies to the subscribers to comp.mac.sys.programmer. I know that this
isn't truly a programming problem, but you might have the specialized know-
ledge to answer this.

The files are named NewFile, ScrapFile, and UndoFile. They appeared
unexpectedly in a folder that we almost never open. (The folder is named
MacFolder and contains copies of the original versions of MacWrite, MacDraw,
MacPaint, and MacDraft. I never throw anything away.) They have only been
created, not modified. None of the three users of this machine can remember
that it was even turned on at the time these files were created (11:03 PM on
Sunday night), but it is possible that our memories are wrong about this. The
setting of the battery powered clock is reasonable.

ScrapFile and UndoFile are empty. NewFile has a resource fork only, but
the data it contains are not in any form recognized by ResEdit. The only thing
obvious to me about these data is that they contain the three file types MSBD,
APPL, and TEXT, the creator type DZT4 (DiskFit), and the two resource types
FREF and ICN# scattered around. For all three of these files the creator and
type are binary zeros (all bits off). According to the file numbers, ScrapFile
was created first, UndoFile second, and their creation dates/times are identi-
cal. (They were created within one second of each other.) NewFile was created
15 seconds later.

I've run Disinfectant 2.4 and it's happy. The setup is a Plus expanded
to 4Mb of memory, running System 6.0.2, Finder 6.1, and MultiFinder 6.0.1.

Does anybody have any ideas? For me personally an email response is best.
If this is of general interest, comp.sys.mac.misc seems to be the best place
for followups.
