[comp.sys.mac.misc] Bad interaction--Help!

vd09+@andrew.cmu.edu (Vincent M. Del Vecchio) (02/15/91)

I am seeing this really weird interaction which is causing machines to
crash; I am finding it really annoying. Can anyone shed any light on
the problem?

Involved programs:
MacWrite II 1.0
Gatekeeper Aid 1.1 (I have reason to believe that the same thing happens
with the next earlier version of GKAid, though I am not sure.)
System 6.0.5, Finder 6.1.5

Way to reproduce the crash:
Boot the System. Run MacWrite II. Choose quit. I see the machine
crash as it quits or sometimes as the Finder is coming up.

Details:
First of all, this seems only to happen on Pluses. In particular, it
seems to occur on neither SEs nor IIcxs. Second, it only seems to
happen with MacWrite II. Third, as far as I can tell, GKAid is a
contributor to the problem. Normally we run a few other INITs and cdevs
as well. If I take them out, I get a different ID on the bomb, but it
still occurs; if I take out GKAid, on the other hand, all is well,
either with or without the other INITs.

I am not certain of the integrity of my System and Finder files; they
are virus-free, and they are supposed to be fairly good. They are
copied directly from "masters", but the masters have been fiddled with
periodically (mainly the configuration, though; not the System or Finder
files themselves). I don't have a set of 6.0.5 masters handy to try
this with a rebuilt system disk. I will post again if I can find 6.0.5
masters and discover anything new with a rebuilt system disk.

I think this also may happen if you do more in MacWrite II than just
quitting; I have been seeing (other peoples') machines crash as they
return to the Finder for a good while now, but have never duplicated it
until now. Some parts of campus are still using older system disks with
the previous version of Gatekeeper Aid, and are also seeing crashes,
which is why I think it is not limited to GKAid 1.1.

Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?
