[comp.sys.mac.misc] How do I connect a laser printer over a serial port

jf@ap.co.umist.ac.uk (John Forrest) (01/24/91)

I've got a Mac classic, but I'm not amazingly au fait with the configuration
(Unix is much more my cup of tea). Anyway, I have access to a laser printer
with only serial connections - it uses postscript, but is not an Apple
LaserWriter. Could someone tell me how to do this. I've a feeling a need a
Chooser file, but all the Chooser LaserWriter configs I've got (the standard
set) assume that AppleTalk is used to connect to the printer.

Any ideas?

YES, your feeling is right. You need a chooser file called:
Asynchronous LaserWriter Driver v.4.0 from APDA part# M7061
It cost $20.00

APDA can be reached: US 800/282-2732 ---- INTERNATIONAL: 408/562-3910

There is a commercial utility called MacPrint which may solve your problem.
MacPrint is a package that provides you with many printer drivers for non
Apple printers. You will probably just have to look on the box and see if your
printer is one of those that it supports. Also included with the software is
a Mac printer port to IBM Serial port cable that you can use with your
printer. The package sells for around $60 in the U.S. If this doesn't work
there is a more expensive program called Freedom of Press which is primarily a
postscript emulator, but it includes the necessary drivers for many printers
