[comp.sys.mac.misc] Mac+ bootup & disk access hangs

peter@viewlogic.COM (Peter Colby) (02/22/91)

I have been having a couple of interesting(?) problems with with my
mac+ for a while.

	1) Finder copies of large (>200K) files will frequently hang the
system. This hang actually leaves the SCSI bus busy. I have to
	   reboot to clear it.

	2) When I boot the mac initially, the sequence gets through all my
INITs and then hangs with an empty desktop and blank memu bar.
This hang usually consists of a number of syncopated accesses to
to the HD followed by the infamous bomb box. Hitting the Restart
button (in the box) just causes a worse crash. I have to use
the programmers switch to reboot. The system comes up fine after
	   this reboot. (The disk accesses before the bomb sound like;
	   tick-tick pause, tick-tick pause, etc.)

	My setup is:

	mac+ (4M)
HP 315M HD with Silverlining 4.24 (maybe 4.23 or 4.25)
	Datadesk mac-101 keyboard
	System 6.0.5
	INITS
GateKeeper (latest) & GateKeepers Aid (also latest)
		Disinfectant INIT 2.4
		ATM 2.0
		Shortcut 1.2
		Magic Menu (StuffIt Deluxe 2.01)
		Suitcase 1.2.8
		Macromaker (from system 6.0.5)
		MasterStrokes (came with datadesk keyboard)
		INIT 2.0
Desktop Manager (from oscar @ apple.com)

Problem #1 started when I installed the HP harddrive and the new
version of Silverlining. I can use a DA or other program to copy
large files with no problem, it's only the Finder that hangs.
The finder hang also occurred with system 6.0.7 (which I can't use
yet since I have some frequently used utilities that don't work with
6.0.7 yet). In fact, the finder hang occurs with NO INITS at all. This
is the one that really bothers me: especially as I need to power cycle
the HD to clear the SCSI bus (I had to cut the RESET line because of
	the infamous UNIT ATTENTION problem.)

Problem #2 started right about the time I installed ATM. I want to try
a couple of ideas before I call this a major problem (like reinstalling
the system, getting rid of a couple of INITs I never use, etc) but
	I'd still like advice.

Any information or suggestions would be gratefully considered.

	Peter C
