[comp.sys.mac.misc] Mac LC with

I'm posting this for my brother, who has net access, but can't post
due to some outgoing news problems.

I just bought a Mac LC with the intention of using it with the same monitor
I use with the PieCy (386 AT compatible). I had read an article in the
28.JAN.91 issue of _Infoworld_ (page 34) that stated that the Mac LC could
drive a VGA monitor. Unfortunatly it didn't give specifics. No big deal I
thought, I'll just hook it up the way Sony 1302's work with Mac II's.

Wrong, wrong, wrong.

The first wrong was that the monitor (a CTX CMS-3436) has a different 9 pin
pinout than the Sony. The second wrong was that all the grounds on both
ends of the connector/cable have to be connected. The third, and probably
most important, was that the LC doesn't sync on green. You have to connect
the vertical and horizontal sync lines.

I finally got both monitors (and a 1304 which has the same pinout as the
1302) to work. The picture quality is decent on both although I like the
Sony better, of course.  I bought the CTX for about $385 five months ago;
the Sony 1304 sells for around $630 at a local dealer (Los Angeles area)--
much better deals than the Apple monitors and you can use them with PC's.

I'm currently running only 16 colors, but I will soon buy the VRAM expan-
sion to get 256 colors. My question is--Is there a way to get the 32K
colors that the 12" RGB monitor gets? Should I be playing with the Monitor
ID bits?

P.S. If this article is untimely (i.e. recently discussed to death) could
someone please summarize its discussion and mail me the highlights? I had
originally intended to post three weeks ago but had mail handling problems.
Thank you.
