The reason I got a permission denied message when trying to download files from sumex-aim.stanford.edu was that on my local machine, I was in a directory for which I did not have write permission. What I interpreted as a message from sumex-aim was really a message from my own computer. Thanks to Troy Barbee who pointed this out to me...
