[comp.sys.mac.misc] pagemaker question

AMELMN02@ysub.ysu.edu (03/08/91)

Our computer lab has an interesting problem with pagemaker and the
apple laser printer. I am hopeful someone can give me an answer..
We have ver3 and ver4 of pagemaker. If you try to print a ver 3
doc it prints fine if someone after tries to print a ver 4 doc
you must turn off the laser printer and turn it on again..
does anyone know why this happens or any clue how to solve it??
any help would be most welcome....
regards,

I remembered reading about the problem in Aldus Magazine. . . so I looked
through back issues under "Aldus PageMaker Q&A". Sure enough, Aldus Mag--
Volume 1, No. 6 Sept./Oct. 1990 page 46 had this to say:

(Paraphrased)

Whenever you print with PM, PM checks to see if Aldus Prep has already
been downloaded to your printer. If not, PM initializes the printer by
downloading Aldus Prep. PM 4.0's prep is fully compatible with version
3.0, but 3.0 is not compatible with 4.0. If your printer contains PM 3.0's
Prep, you have to shut off the printer to clear it before printing a 4.0 doc.

To eliminate this problem on a network, etc., make sure Aldus Prep 4.0
is the only version available.

Hope this helps,

Both versions of pagemaker use their own special driver code for the
laserwriter. These special drivers are not the same between v3 and v4.
This code is sent to the laserwriter the first time a PM doc is printed,
and is kept there in case more follow.
I suspect that the v3 driver already resident in the Lw is confusing v4,
turning it off empties its memory, allowing you to print v4 docs.
Try it the other way around, ie: print a v4 doc and then a v3 doc.
If that works, then copy the v4 drivers onto the machine running v3.
