[comp.sys.mac.misc] Should I get a Macintosh LC and sell my SE?

bskendig@phoenix.Princeton.EDU (Brian Kendig) (03/10/91)

I'm a suffering college student ;) whose Mac SE has served him well
for two and a half years. But now it looks like I might be able to
get a pretty good deal on selling my current system and getting an LC.

Here are the stats: Right now I have an SE which, after I remove the
extra memory, will have 1Mb RAM and two 800k floppies. I also have a
Tulin 50 meg hard drive with (I believe) 40 ms access time. Both are
in very good shape, and neither has ever required any servicing.

I can upgrade to a Mac LC with, after I add my extra memory, will have
4Mb RAM and one 1.4M floppy. It will also have an Apple 40Mb hard
drive built in. I'd like to get the 13-inch monitor with it.

What's a good price for trying to sell an SE these days? How much
could I respectfully ask for my unit, and for the hard drive? With
University discounts, the LC will cost me about $2000, I think (can
anyone verify this?).

I don't really *need* to move up from my SE right now, but I'm afraid
that if I wait too long, its market value will drop through the floor,
and eventually I won't be able to get chicken-scratch for it. Moving
up to a IIsi is out of the question, as I don't need that kind of
power at all nor do I have the money to spare.

Thus, the Question: Is the Macintosh LC a market-stable enough
machine? Do you think it'll hold its value for at least another year
or two? Do you think I'll be better off in the long run by bailing
out of my SE right now while I can still get some money for it, or is
the LC not a big enough jump upwards to even bother? What do you
think of the LC on its own merits -- is it quality merchandise?

And should I buy the Apple 13-inch color monitor, or do you think I
could get a better deal on a third-party VGA monitor to use with it?

Thanks for any and all suggestions. If only I had more money! ;)
