I received a letter in the mail today with a special offer for Norton Utilities Mac, only $50. I'm considering buying it for the disk unerase and optimization utilities. I want to know if anyone knows about the optimizing utility of Norton. I have used the optimization program from Mac Tools Deluxe, and it doesn't seem to do much. Does the Norton optimize do a full optimization with unfragmenting files and organizing them on the drive to eliminate holes? I'd appreciate any answers. -- (Steve Kosloske) | "If you want it today, you can ------------------------------------| have it, but don't expect it Internet: zark@csd4.csd.uwm.edu | tomorrow. Norton utilities works damn well, even on 6.0.7. The Speed Disk utility will move files around to make them contiguous. $50.00 is a good price for those tools. The "red" emergency disk does not work directly with a IIsi - it comes with a version of the OS that does not recognize a IIsi (and probably won't recognize a LC either); I had to copy my system file to a HD (1.44 MB) disk, since 6.0.7 & Norton > 800K... The File Doctor (I think that's what it's called) fixed a problem that I had with my file system, and I use the Speed Disk utility about every week or so. Just to check the status of the disk. Optimizing takes about 5 minutes or less on an 80 MB disk with about 35-40MB in use. They say to turn color off to make it run faster, but it is more fun to watch in color :->. -- Ron Crocker Motorola Radio-Telephone Systems Group, Cellular Infrastructure Group (708) 632-4752 [FAX: (708) 632-4430] crocker@mot.com or uunet!motcid!crocker
