I'm having a problem with the internal HD in my SE. After a successful boot the machine locks upon its first need to access the HD. Now the machine booted from this hard drive, but flashes the access light once upon its first subsequently needed read and locks the machine up. Experience, trial and error have revealed that if this internal Quantum 40 is unplugged the problem disappears (the trivial solution). Second, if instead of using the menu shut down at the end of session, I just turn the power off, the next boot up and subsequent access is successful; i.e. a dirty shutdown = no problem. If after a lock up I restart with the programmer switch the problem is still present. If I use the programmers switch and a minimum system on floppy, everything boots till the HD icon appears, then lock. If I switch off the power (count 5) and back on again, the problem is gone. I've tryed about everything including; zap prams, install different systems, erase and reformat drive, run checks on drive sectors and performance,... The set up: SE (68000, 16MHz) RasterOps 19" monitor/Accelerator Quantum 40 internal drive StorWare (UniMac) HD setup software System 6.0.3 (presently) RasterOps says they know of no incompatabilities, and sent their latest cdev for the monitor, no change. I've tryed zero inits, etc (minimum system), no change. I believe the answer lies in the difference created between a clean and dirty shutdown. What does/doesn't happen in these two shutdown schemes? How does this affect the HD after it has already started the machine successfully? What else can I check? This is a real puzzle! -- Patrick L.
