[comp.sys.mac.misc] Mac Compress

eck@eniac.seas.upenn.edu (Hangnail Whipperwill) (02/26/91)

Does anyone have the email address of the author of MacCompress,
Lloyd L. Chambers, or a version more recent than 3.2? In the help file,
he says that he can receive email, but lists no address. I've been
getting bus errors trying to decompress files bigger than 10K...thanks
in advance.

Sorry if this is a common question but I don't usually read this group.
Anyway is there the compatible equivalent of the PC archiving programs like
PKARC, PKZIP etc on the MACs? I want to transfer some files over a network
and the best way to save bandwidth would be to compress on the source machine
and then decompress on the target machine.

If there isn't is there any other way of reducing tranfer times. At about
1 Meg per minute through Appletalk it's getting pretty slow.

A software solution and preferably PD would be best!

Thanks

There sure is. There's MacArc, ArcMac, MacLHArc, MacZoo, etc. I can also
recommend Compact Pro 1.3 or Stuffit 1.5.1.

Stuffit 1.5.1 is the standard MAC compressio/uncompression
utility. It is shareware and you should be able to get it from a
user group.
