[comp.sys.mac.misc] Any comments on the Laserwriter LS?

hofbauer@csri.toronto.edu (John Hofbauer) (03/18/91)

A few people have posted their initial impressions of the Stylewriter
but I haven't seen anything on the LS. Any comments/impressions out
there?

Nice resolution but slower than a dog. The 4 ppm rate is only
achieved when you're printing duplicates of the same page.
Text only pages are spit out at around one every 40 seconds,
and if you do background printing the speed drops to about
one page per every four minutes. (This done on an SE/30, by the
way...)

I suspect either the TrueType fonts and the serial connection
are to blame for this lackluster speed. Printing a TIFF image
to the LS and to an NTX takes the same amount of time.

I was able to print about 2-3 ppm from my IIsi. The fastest way
to print, I found, was to turn background printing on, then select
"shut down" and click the option that says "finish printing before
shutting down." This locks up the machine so that printing gets
*all* the CPU time.
